Should my business be using social media?
Over the course of time, advertisement has taken on many different shapes. Depending upon your age, you may remember all of these or only a few of these: Yellow pages, White pages, Radio ads, TV Commercials, billboards, yard signs, etc. More recently, Social Media has became a massive advertising outlet for businesses all around the globe. While there have been many variations of advertisement delivery, the purpose has remained the same. Business leaders need to reach new clients to continue to grow their business. Although Social Media isn’t new to us in 2023, the thought of using it to advertise your business very well could be. Most people immediately think of funny memes, family vacation albums, and hilarious videos when they think of Social Media. However, the benefits for a business using social media are far greater than that.
Okay, enough rambling. You probably clicked on this post to get an answer to the question in the title. In short, the answer is yes. 100% of the time, yes. Your business should be using social media today. Now that we’ve covered that your business should be using social media, let’s pivot to the reason WHY!
Why should your business be using social media in 2023? Social media is an opportunity to reach new people. It’s an opportunity to create a community. It’s a chance for someone to refer your business to someone that is actively searching for the service that you offer! In addition to those benefits, users are now using social media as search engines. Think Google or Bing, but people are doing that on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. YouTube is the second largest search engine behind Google. Think about it, I bet you’ve spent some amount of time searching for an answer on YouTube.
I do not go a single day without seeing a post on my Facebook feed of someone asking for recommendations “Who is the best at (FILL IN THE BLANK)?”. If your business isn’t on Facebook, your loyal customers don’t have the ability to tag you in that post or recommend you. It’s entirely possible that you may miss out on that customer altogether if you don’t have a business page on Facebook. That’s just one example of the passive power of social media for a business. It’s passive in the sense that once your business page exists on a platform, your customers and fan base can then refer your business to new people for you!
Earlier, I mentioned being able to build a community on Social Media. In our experience, people just want to feel included. They want to feel as though they are in the know. Posting photos of project updates, new inventory, behind the scenes content. All of these are simple ways that you can begin to include people in your business. As you begin to do that, what you’ll notice is that people will start to feel more connected with your business because they are getting to see parts of it that they otherwise never would have seen if you weren’t on social media. It’s important to note that social media isn’t always about finding the new customer today because that person may not need your service today, but if they discover your business today and begin relating to your business, they’ll be more likely to be a customer down the road.
Imagine when the radio was first used to advertise. Imagine being a business and not taking advantage of this new radio technology in the 1920’s. Looking back at it, we’d agree that would be a foolish mistake, right? Hindsight is 20/20. If you aren’t using Social Media today, it might be comparable to not using the radio to advertise in the 1920’s. Even if the bulk of your business is generated by an older demographic, you need to be appealing to the younger demographic today, so they can be customers in the future. Word of mouth is great and it’s never going anywhere, but Social Media has such great power to passively reach a new audience for you and your business.
