Faith & Frames Episode 56 - Don’t fix it in post | Save Hours of Editing time by doing this instead!

We've all uttered the phrase "i'll fix it in post" at some time while shooting photo or video.
It seems so harmless to leave that trash can in the scene because Photoshop can clone it out!
However, we can all relate to hating ourselves in the editing suite because we didn't take a few preventative steps whilst shooting. Hopefully these tips will help next time you think you wanna "fix it" later!

Here’s a few tips that can help save you time by spending LESS time editing:

1. Location Scouting (in person)- I know this sounds obvious, but scouting the location of your shoot PRIOR to the shoot, can give you such a head start to having a great shoot. You can analyze the light angle and direction. You can discover the areas to avoid from a compositional standpoint or bad lighting standpoint.
2. How to location scout (remotely)- Sometimes, you physically can’t scout the location in person. Perhaps the budget or time doesn’t allow you that opportunity. You can still use tools at your disposal like Google Earth and email. We had a shoot in Nashville, TN and it wasn’t feasible to go in person to see the event space. So, I emailed the event location sales staff and asked for some images of their conference room. At that point, we knew exactly what the room looked like, we paired it with Google Earth to discover the Windows were North facing, which meant we would have indirect light coming in all day. There’s always a way to get an idea as to what your location is going to be shooting in.
3. Use Social Media to help scout your location- Use geotags of locations to see all of the other images that have been taken in that area. If you scroll through several of those images, you’re going to be able to gain a great sense of what the entire area looks like by comparing all of the images with that geo-tag. This can be so helpful for a new outdoor location that you’re going to be shooting in.
4. Be aware of your background- The background can often be the last thing on your mind when you’re on location. We get it! There’s a lot going through your mind on location. You’ve got the light to analyze, poses to remember, camera settings to dial in.. but what about that background? Taking the extra seconds to analyze your background while on site, is well worth it. Fixing a blunder in the background may be as simple as sliding 2 feet to the right or the left.
5. Shoot the “in between” moments- With photo and video storage being so affordable these days, it’s okay to overshoot. However, overshoot with a purpose. Specifically when you’re on site with a client, this means shoo the in between moments. Shoot the moments between takes or between poses. You’re going to end up with some GREAT candid moments that can be used for b-roll or within the image delivery.
6. Import and Cull your images first- After backing up your images to external storage, imported them in Lightroom, cull your images next. Go through the whole set and quickly trim it down to your favorite images. There’s no sense in wasting time editing images that you aren’t going to deliver to the client.
7. Copy/Paste your edit settings- After you’ve culled your images, Edit the first image in the set. Once you’ve dialed that first image in to the point that you’re happy with it, Copy those edit settings and Paste them to the remainder of the set of images. This doesn’t mean all of the images are now completely edited, but now you’ve got a very consistent starting point for all of the images in the entire set. Your set will be more cohesive now.
8. Use Lots of SMALL adjustments to have BIG impact- Think of Bob Ross when you’re editing your next set of images. Bob doesn’t make huge changes all at once to craft his beautiful paintings. No, he uses multiple layers of colors and textures to build upon the last and ultimately craft the final image that he had in mind. Using that same concept with photo editing, use lots of small adjustments and you’ll notice a HUGE impact to your images.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us. We’d love to help answer anything you have questions about. Remember, photography and videography are both a journey that has no finish line. You’re always learning and improving and that’s what makes it so fun. Enjoy the process and keep shooting!

I'm I'm told with age balance goes anyway anyways but um yeah to to have it

0:06

one day in great capacity and then to have it not be to

0:12

not too it's uh yeah it's been pretty debilitating hey speaking of things that we take for granted um so as some of our

0:20

audience may know others may not um we're we're big advocates for Tennessee kids belong they're a wonderful

0:26

organization o and uh so I went I went and shot with them the other day to help him with some interviews and I don't

0:32

even think I've told you this yet because we've just been so busy with other things but so the things that we take for

0:39

granted you know during those interviews typically they will ask them what are what are three wishes that you have

0:44

what's your perfect day what's your day yeah which Perfect Day simp things um this one was what are your three wishes um there was a nine-year-old boy

0:53

I can't give his name right now for privacy purposes but there's a nine-year-old boy during that interview and the three things that he asked for

1:00

number one he said I want a home o not a house home mhm yeah so we often take

1:06

that for granted right secondly he said I want a family that will take me to church dang yeah let that let that

1:13

simmer a little bit and then I'll wreck you real quick number three he said I

1:19

want to go to church so I can get saved oh sweetheart you don't got to go to church we can do this right now so

1:26

those those were his three wishes as a 9-year-old boy you me back in the corner running the camera I'm just oh that that

1:33

one wrecked me pretty hard because again it's like this this dude's nine and he understands already the need yeah uh for

1:40

the Plan of Salvation so that that was something that man and those those shoots are always difficult but hearing

1:47

something like that from a kid that's so young is just it's incredible it's incredible we make things so complicated

1:53

oh yeah we definitely definitely uh take things for granted we we we we over

1:59

complicate things as you stated for sure uh yeah wow waged me raed me 9 years old

2:07

uh I don't know how to transition into our topic because it's uh well there we

2:12

go how about that good morning um hopefully hopefully uh hopefully you weren't driving uh I say wipe away wipe

2:19

away the water works for a second so you don't wreck and yeah so that you can see um but uh what we're going to talk about

2:27

today is we've all said

2:32

it and I'll tell you this every time I've said it I have absolutely hated myself at least as creative as we've

2:39

said it uh I'll fix it and post I'll fix it and post I will I will remove that in

2:45

Photoshop later you know what's funny is is I see

2:52

other creatives say this all the time and I tell myself this all the time I'm not going to fix it and post this time

3:00

and I still end up fixing a lot of things of post yeah because you get on the shoot adrenaline's rushing and and

3:06

you get what's called whiskey throttle and you just Throttle Down I have never heard whiskey throttle in a photography

3:12

uh analogy but I mean here we are here we go here we are but basically that's what we're going to talk about is ways

3:18

to avoid it and how to save yourself time yeah in editing he in post in post

3:24

and and speaking of whiskey throttle this is funny because in in my past life

3:29

um I was certainly whiskey throttle wide open on some caffeine

3:35

oh and uh because of this uh I suffered from a lot of bad uh side effects you

3:41

know headaches when I didn't have caffeine uh sometimes I couldn't sleep very good so whenever our our friends

3:49

magic mind reached out to us asking if we wanted to partner with them and their magic mind mental performance shot I

3:54

thought what the heck I'll give it a try yeah I was drinking 12 to 1500 M Mig of

4:00

caffeine a day ouch yeah yeah just a function just normal what's in a coffee coffee is about

4:05

70 normal daily recommendation is no more than 500 ouch so I was doing about

4:10

three times that yeah um so I thought what the heck we'll give it a shot and I tried their mental performance shot and

4:16

I can sit here and tell you today that has helped mitigate my caffeine consumption nice uh I no longer feel the

4:22

need for my afternoon energy drink right I feel like with my family I'm a little more present a little more focused a

4:28

little more mindful yep um because of the mental performance shot in it and they do this with a few clean ingredients including Lion's main

4:35

mushroom right grown right here in the USFA yep ceremonial grade Macha te straight from Japan and others as well

4:42

and folks they have provided a code for you if you would like to try magicmine for yourself use the code motion 20 we

4:49

will put it in the description down below there you go get you some dollars off your magicmine subscription and magicmine thank you guys for helping

4:54

this caffeine addict out yeah on that note meat and taters jar get us the meat and T we are not fixing it in post today

5:01

no well we say we're not we probably won't we probably still will we'll proba yeah we'll probably still fall victim to

5:07

this butal as we do the literal goal is to to attempt to help you um save tons

5:15

of terrible words about yourselves uh those late night edits where you're like oh man I really wish I wouldn't have

5:21

said I'll just remove that and post it's 3:00 a.m. and you've just popped a magic mind mental performance shot maybe you

5:27

have maybe you haven't um but here we are trying to fix something that we said we would fix in posted yes

5:34

well uh I forget the ppppp the proper planning all that right you know there's

5:40

there's tons of an or uh phrasings there I would just say proper planning prevents piss poor performance something

5:48

along those lines right right it's at the end of the day if you don't plan

5:53

you've if you fail to plan you you can to fail you can plan to fail so that's no different than with what we do photo

6:01

and video and we've kind of broken this idea into what I'm going to call three phases right uh three phases of not

6:07

fixing it in post we're going to fix it in Pre and we're going to fix it in in

6:12

present get it right um so let's kind of dive into phase one Jared when it comes to not fixing and posting and this I

6:18

think relates whether you're a photographer possibly videographer as well but let's just say for phase one

6:24

you know I'm I'm a photographer about to go do a family shoot yeah um because I think we have a lot of of people that

6:29

we're close with or in groups with that this is kind of their primary thing so phase one of not fixing it in post yeah

6:36

it be pre-shoot pre-production whatever you want to call it it's and you don't always have this opportunity and I will

6:42

I will like big asterisk right there you sometimes you don't have the opportunity

6:48

but when the opportunity is present you need to put the extra effort in and do some location scouting do some homework

6:54

do do do a little bit of uh homework um do do location scouting for instance if

7:01

you know for a fact that um this client wants you to come out to their family farm to take their photos or you're

7:08

going to do a shoot on this Family Farm Drive by a day or two before the

7:15

shoot around the time of day that you're going to be shooting and just observe observe okay

7:23

so the lights coming in from this side um this section of the farm should be

7:28

very nice and softly lit you know whatever it is that you're going for but go by some trees over here I like got

7:34

some cows back here that I like so so so go see what you're going to be you know

7:40

shooting in um I think I think location scouting when you are afforded the

7:46

opportunity um is definitely definitely worth the extra effort and I know like

7:51

you're technically not getting paid right for for that for that extra work but here's

7:57

the thing the person who pays for you're not extra work on the back end is you

8:02

right in my opinion it's you in the edit it's like gosh if I had just if I just

8:08

went there I would have known we could have shot over here and I'd have solved all my problems well and I think I think

8:13

it pays or I think it does pay though to do to do that when you're afforded the opportunity because at the end of the

8:20

day we are we're problem solvers we've mentioned that in in previous episodes

8:26

but we're paid based on how we accomplish our Mission mhm you know so a

8:31

family doesn't care if you come out with the the best camera that's ever been produced or or the best lens that's ever been made they want to know are you

8:38

going to capture right our family in a way that shines a a realistic and and

8:44

true and good look on our family right and I think pre-production wise location scouting is is a great way to help

8:50

yourself do that oh yeah well and so I'll give you an example of not being able to go in person it just physically

8:56

wasn't feasible uh a few weeks ago we shot uh year two of the strong mom event yes well they had went to a new hotel so

9:03

we didn't have the knowledge of okay well we're in the same hotel we know all the ins and outs no this is a new hotel

9:10

so leg work on The Upfront was I reached out to the hotel uh sales staff who does

9:16

all their events to get some sample images I was like hey can you just literally go snap a few images of your

9:22

conference center so you let the phone do the visiting so I I I asked Emil you let email do absolutely I sent them an

9:28

email they said yes sure no problem the next day I had images so I knew okay now there's a lot of Windows okay so now I'm

9:35

thinking we need a lot of light well do we need a lot of light like what what window or what uh cardinal direction are

9:42

these windows facing yep you know so I then took to Google Earth and saw okay

9:49

this is that side of the building right now I know that that is a uh North facing window yeah thankfully

9:57

it was it was a North facing window have indirect light indirect light the whole time it wasn't ever going to be

10:03

backlighting or beaming in from the east or the West it was so it was best case scenario but all that to say I knew at

10:10

that point we would have nice ambient light coming through and we could actually use those windows and we could use those windows didn't have to Black

10:16

them out so so that was a use of uh just remote resources I say you're

10:22

using technology at that point in time let Google Earth Google Earth has um if

10:28

if you use Google Earth it has the sun feature yes like you can go through the angle of the sun on

10:35

October 24th or whatever it is and you can see oh there's the angle of the sun

10:40

yeah and I think too that that's pretty smart and and I'll say this because I I am a I am a in-person type of guy I

10:48

think we've mentioned that in the past but I would prefer to actually physically show up on a location to

10:54

scout it but you don't have to and and that strong mom example was great like it would have made no sense

11:00

to drive 4 hours to location scout right when we a we didn't have a day for

11:05

location scouting in in the budget but B uh you were able to contact somebody who could get us some sample photos we found

11:11

a couple online as well so like we let the technology work for us at that point time and I think that's a great way but

11:17

some form of location scout yeah will absolutely help you whether you're doing a family session a car photography shoot

11:24

a corporate head shot whatever yeah um a a location scout will certainly help and

11:29

that's mostly for like outdoor stuff you know if you're in audio then that doesn't matter unless you're shooting in

11:35

a new studio that you've never shot in before right right like if you're renting a space out that's that's that's

11:40

a good point I guess the next thing that I would say with with regard like just another tool that you have uh at your

11:46

fingertips literally uh with helping you in location scouting is I mean leverage

11:52

social media location tag those photo groups for instance well I mean yeah no I'm I'm mean I'm even saying period okay

11:59

so like let's just say for whatever reason a very popular area which I don't know if it's accessible right now maybe

12:04

it is maybe it's not but Max Patch yeah okay that's in North Carolina right it is a beautiful bald uh in the middle of

12:10

the Appalachia mountains and a lot of people like to go take photos there if you have been yeah I mean if you if you

12:16

are uh you know being asked to take photos there and you've personally never been there yeah guess what other

12:22

photographers have been go to Instagram type in Max Patch find that Geo tag and look at all the images at that point you

12:29

can you can get a very good feel for what the space looks like again use places like Google Earth you can again

12:35

see the whole area at that point and and it's just going to help you be a little

12:41

bit better prepared when you show up yeah you go ahead and have some plays drawn up basically for going into our

12:47

coaching mentality and here's the other thing too it it's it's one of those things where again we're we're problem

12:55

solvers sometimes you don't I mean sometimes it just doesn't pan out in the sense like okay I location scouted I

13:02

plan for a sunny day yeah and we got some clouds and we've got an overcast day like or maybe the landscape has

13:08

changed since you did your location scout so I mean we've certainly had some landscape changes in the past few months

13:15

you're still going to have to be able to Pivot on the fly yeah you've got to adapt

13:21

however I've never been to a location scout or went through a location scout and been like this was a waste of time

13:28

right right you know like it's always gives me more clarity it's always been of a benefit and I guess the last one uh

13:35

still with location scouting is I mean ask locals yeah you know ask locals

13:40

local people local photography groups I mean bird watching groups what well I mean whoever's been to that location you

13:47

do have the people and I'm not going to lie you do have the people who like for whatever reason uh feel as though they

13:53

have the keys to the kingdom they they'll gatekeep like secret spots you know and stuff like that but for the

13:59

most part I will tell you the photography community and even the videography Community um is is pretty

14:06

forthcoming with information so for instance if you if you really liked the

14:11

way that this person's uh video looked or you really like the way that this person's set of photos

14:17

looked don't hesitate to reach out to them and say hey where where did you do this in some cases you won't have access

14:24

to that that may be somebody's private property but I mean it also may be public property and at that point you now know a place where you can go shoot

14:31

photos and you know the location now yeah I like that I like that um yeah let

14:36

leverage leverage people I mean there's there's absolutely nothing wrong with asking people to help right uh most

14:42

people most people are willing to I know I'm an open book at I would love to see

14:47

what you do with some locations that I shoot at because it may give me some good ideas yeah you know there you go I

14:53

don't know at all I'm so so it's it's also fun to to um for instance we just

14:58

had family photos or not family photos my wife and I had couple photos which was the first time since we've had

15:04

photos since probably our wedding um you tried to tell me you didn't have no nice Duds I don't those were American Eagle

15:10

um pants and my sister called me out on it she said uh how old are those pants I said oh don't matter they were she goes

15:18

I saw the American Eagle and I knew that uh they had some age on them wait a second Kylie what's wrong with the American Eagle pants I still wear them

15:24

well evidently I'm I'm I'm an old fart um listen time out Quest right here the

15:30

American Eagle Flex fit jeans yeah are some of the greatest jeans in modern

15:36

male Jean design yeah that's that's probably a hill worth done on anyways but um jeez

15:43

what was interesting we shot at at at my house and um I've shot several sessions

15:48

at my house and I knew the spots that I likeed photograph it was interesting to

15:54

see a different photographer shoot on the property that you own and that you've shot cuz it's

16:00

like i' never thought about shooting that spot did she go to any of of your spots no she did but she also went to

16:06

picked a few that I was like never thought about that never thought about that that works and a lot of it had to do a lot of it had to do with Fall

16:12

Foliage there was a red tree behind so like it was really pretty and pleasing because it matched the dress and all

16:17

those things but like it was just really interesting to see how another photographer sees the same area I don't

16:23

know that's just I it not really a point with location scouting but just I mean it's a cool point though like again

16:28

reach out to people people are willing to help you might learn something might learn something so you can do all the

16:34

location scouting that you want uh you can location scout until you are blue in the face but at some point it comes time

16:39

to actually execute yeah you got to make a photo you got to make a photo You' got to make a video you've got to show up

16:45

and produce which is the production this is the shoot phase two this is this is

16:50

the second phase and again you could have everything planned

16:57

out in this location scout and you may be dealt a completely

17:02

different set of cards the they of you can and and with that set of cards

17:07

though regardless of the weather regardless of of maybe how the landscape

17:12

has changed I think one thing that you and I both agreed on uh off camera for this first point is be aware of your of

17:21

your surroundings yeah be aware of your background when you're shooting because on your location scout yep you know

17:27

there may not have been a a failed tree that is ugly and has branches sticking

17:33

up everywhere and it's sticking up out the back of your subject's head whatever right you may not have seen the dumpster that is in the back corner of your frame

17:40

now but um be aware of your background be aware of your location yeah be aware

17:46

of of like you said your background and and and what is behind so like it's

17:51

really it's really really really easy to get fixated on the subject yeah you you've got a million things you've got to to concentrate poses

17:59

triangle did I manipulate like You' got all these things oh wait it focused like all of these things are running through

18:04

your head it's so easy to let the background slip it's so easy to let the background slip now too I mean with with

18:11

the improvements that we have in in AI um it's so easy just to say oh I'll

18:17

remove that trash can and post or oh that that filled tree or those branches sticking up out of my subject's head no

18:24

biggie I'll lay it out but sometimes it doesn't work

18:29

it's not perfect it's not perfect um but if we're talking about ways to save yourself time in editing yeah you can

18:36

save yourself hours of time by not even having to use it by not ever having to put yourself in those situations so like

18:42

literally just take the extra moment assess listen look at the back of your

18:48

camera yeah look at review your images while you're there on site I mean that's

18:53

that's that's a sure fireway it it you I've I've very rarely been shocked when I get it into computer yeah based upon

19:00

like what I saw that day now I I can tell you that day or not if I I should

19:06

have moved 5T to the right yeah I would framed that tree out and everything would have been better literally a

19:12

single side step May location will save you many steps in post a single side

19:19

step the only other thing that you could do um is is to to help yourself with

19:24

backgrounds if your lens allows you might be able to rely on some bokeh sure

19:29

blow it out super shallow depth of field might as well at that point I pay for F12 I'm going to use all of them yeah

19:37

well good luck on your focus system but I mean that is a tool it be it's a tool

19:42

you have at your disposal so be just be aware of what is behind your subject not

19:47

just your subject yeah or blow it out and then you don't even have to care about it well there you go that's an option you said it not always an option

19:55

but the biggest thing is is I I've personally felt victim to this many many many times and it's more so like it the

20:04

the the most common and this is going back to my wedding days the most common is when you're taking all those group shots right after the ceremony and

20:11

everybody just kind of picks a spot yep and you're like oh there's an ugly fire pit here it's fine I'll stamp it out

20:18

I'll fix it and post well guess what you get to do now you get to hate yourself for all300 images you've got yeah 62

20:26

poses and 62 groupings of that spef specific framing now got to frame the fire pit

20:31

out whereas if you had just I mean it could be just as simple as like I said a simple side step many steps now now

20:38

you're going to save yourself a lot of time and hatred of yourself in post production um the other thing that I

20:46

think comes into play while on the shoot in addition to to to your background is

20:53

to to like nail your poses yeah posing is very difficult I feel like that's

20:58

something that most people struggle with yeah um and and a lot of it depends on the style of photographer that you are

21:05

most Studio photographers are like really good at it well yeah that's what they do every single day but like if you

21:10

were more of a family photographer or documentarian yeah you just want those candid moments so I will say this like a

21:17

pose is more of like a prompt yeah I want to get you into this position MH um

21:23

that feels natural for you guys and then seconds later after your guard goes down

21:30

that's when that IM yeah that's when I'm going to get the gold that's when I'm really going to get the gold well and it the thing with with posing too is it it

21:36

gets your it gets your subjects moving yep um it gets them kind of comfortable kind of loose and and I think one

21:42

actually two people that are are great at this um AR Bonnie and Melissa I've done shoots with both and while they are

21:50

great at prompting me with poses where they where they become even greater is

21:56

what they fire after the fact cuz after they've posed me they're then crack cracking jokes right or we're we're

22:02

having a conversation or we're making each other laugh or me and Sarah are are laughing with each other that's when

22:07

they're getting their gold and so that's what makes them Masters in my opinion of like posing is the fact that they're not

22:14

actually using those poses sometimes no and and and posing is certainly not what I would call my strong suit either um

22:21

like I really don't I I would not say that as a strength of mine my documentarian yeah let me get you into

22:27

this pose or your vers of this pose and then yeah I'm probably going to say something ridiculous to to get you to

22:34

crack to get you to crack and now this is their version of that pose and that's where the gold is so with that though we

22:41

still have to be prepared and I think off camera we had mentioned too there are some resources if you do struggle

22:47

with posing oh yes um what are some of those resources that we have so you've got unscripted yeah that is an probably

22:53

one of my favorite posing app um and I think it's for iOS and Android but

22:59

somebody fact check me please there is a free version now you're going to be limited in what you can see they're going to blur out some of the ones I

23:05

think the paid version though is like 6.99 yeah so there's a there's a paid version and a free version but unscripted it does a great job of

23:12

breaking it down are you doing a newborn session are you family sessions are you a wedding photographer you many examples

23:17

is this a family with just the dad I mean so like it gives you all of these categories and subcategories to just

23:22

give you inspiration so you've got unscripted you've got places like Pinterest Pinterest is a great

23:30

foring um like you can literally Google senior uh senior portraits by the water

23:35

and you're going to be flooded of them tons of options like oh I do like that I like that I like that so when you when

23:42

you find something you like I would suggest this and maybe this is because we're in the rural mountains of East

23:48

Tennessee screenshot it yeah do not rely on data yeah don't think that you're

23:54

gonna have Sal service on the top of Max Patch and be able to oh heck my phone doesn't work at all currently yeah got a

24:01

bad sim card got a bad sim card so have fun trying to contact me so yeah screenshot it that way it's at least in

24:07

your camera roll regardless of your cellular data basically if you have battery yeah you can good to go you can

24:13

you can come back to that make sure you charge your phone though here's here's a some of us don't well yeah you almost

24:20

never charge it so in addition to it not having SOS mode problems you you may not have juice um but here's a uh here's a

24:28

quick like Pro tip o bonus tip I'm going to write this down instead so so you may

24:35

already have anxiety about posing right and so now you've got anxiety you you

24:40

you've screenshotted you're sweating you're sweating because now it's like okay I just did this pose let me pull my phone

24:46

out and reference the next one and oh yep okay so you may have great anxiety

24:52

about that which I don't think you should but your KNE are weak and your arms are heavy at this point in time hey

24:57

maybe there's vomit on your sweater but instead of screenshotting them and leaving them on your phone yes

25:04

screenshot them uhhuh so now you've got a JPEG or PNG whatever put those on

25:10

their SD card that you put in your camera what now mind blown now you can

25:18

reference them on the back of your camera I've actually never known so that

25:24

was a possibility it's like and so now instead of of you pulling your phone out

25:29

to find the next it just looks like you're looking at the image that you just shot which hopefully no clients are

25:34

listening to this cuz this is well I mean even still they've got to know they've got to know that you know posing

25:40

is is not natural uh you know the photography business hey just a little tip exposed put them on your SD card and

25:47

now you can reference them on the back of your LCD 30 for 30 how to cheat your poses there you go last one would be

25:53

overshoot yeah get those candid moments yeah get the candids those are the best ones anyways and my and all of my

25:58

experience shooting families shooting couples yeah um the editing the best images 99 times out of

26:07

a 100 are those in between moments it's the candid moments that's when you really capture the personality of the

26:13

person well they let their guard down because they're not expecting you to capture well I mean most people aren't models right they're not used to being

26:19

posed and and and uh put into these precarious funky correct positions

26:26

correct but when you get those candid moments MH that's that's when they're in their natural habitat so you've got to overshoot a little bit yeah um very

26:33

rarely have I ever actually almost never have I ever gotten to post and been

26:39

like wow I took too many images even if I took a lot of images normally it's

26:44

it's it's easier to weed down something but guess guess what you can't do you can't add pictures you can't add

26:49

pictures so if you didn't take it and you get in there and you're like I'm delivering 20 images and I'm I'm I'm

26:55

drawing right now I'm drawing for straws I've only got 12 you know sweetheart trouble get those

27:01

candids shoot the in between moments yeah I can shoot the in between moments I can agree that so these are good phase two I I want to move into to phase three

27:09

um and that is actual post- production so we've talked about all the ways to help mitigate y uh hating yourself in

27:16

the edit but now that we're actually in the edit let's kind of touch on again things that will just save us time so my

27:24

workflow every single time I get back from a shoot regard regardless if it's a client shoot a shoot that I've just went

27:30

out and shot photos for myself whatever my workflow never wavers I have I've got this down this is what I like to do I

27:39

always import my images now I'm sitting here in Lightroom my first step is to go

27:46

through all the presets that I've created for myself pick the one that I like the best so you're creating presets

27:52

then you created presets and you're going to use those I have created presets or if you've downloaded and bought presets on that first image that

27:59

you like I I'll normally call first right I'll normally get I I'll do a first pass so now I'm only editing the

28:04

ones that I like I will on that very first image that I like I will find a preset that I like whether I created it

28:10

whatever M boom then I tweak that image yeah because presets are not like right

28:17

it's yeah it's a starting place it's still a starting point hey by the way I'm going to do an upsell here and a Shameless plug um if you want to know

28:24

how to organize your Lightroom catalog Jared has a great YouTube video on his channel on his personal channel on how

28:30

to organize that it actually helped me tremendously and I've been in light room for a long time so it is kind of daunting but what I go to the first

28:37

image I throw the preset that I like the best on it I fix that image I get that image to its finished State yes and

28:46

here's where the big time saving comes I copy those settings CNP and paste them

28:51

to the rest of the set now does that mean that every other image is done no no however starting place I have greatly

28:58

saved myself a lot of times because this was the same location mostly the same lighting the same skin tones the same

29:04

like you've got the same base now got same base versus editing each individual picture and by the time you get to the

29:10

end of the set it looks nothing like the first picture right so yeah get that

29:15

first image the way you like it copy and paste it to the rest yep that's your starting Place consistent it's you're

29:20

already way more consistent at that point which we talked about in the previous episode like having consistency in your photos is very very important

29:28

when it comes to your style your look etc etc I think I think that's really where you start to note someone's growth

29:35

as a photographer yeah uh a lot of beginners struggle with that I struggle with that uh my first few sets of images

29:42

not cohesive whatsoever from start to finish because I was editing each individual picture right I then learned

29:47

that you can take the principles and the settings from this image and start the rest of the images from that exact same

29:54

starting point uh the next thing is is be careful with your edits uh and

30:02

what I mean by that is like less is truly more in most cases make minute adjustments small adjustments make lots

30:09

of small changes you know if you're constantly moving all the sliders all the way to the extremes you're you're

30:15

impacting a lot Clarity slider 100y yeah take it easy on the clarity slider um

30:21

that's that and the DH those are my those are my pet peeves um but do lots

30:27

of small changes that's where you're and along those

30:32

lines I'll say this it took me a while to learn the power of masks even in Lightroom they've got

30:39

great masking options now that used to mostly be radial subject background that used to mostly just be in Photoshop but

30:47

they've started to give a lot of power to the masking section within Lightroom and there's a lot of really great tools

30:52

but rather than using one or two masks I have found that most images are much

31:00

better suited with lots of masks that are very localized very specialized

31:06

small adjustments well they're all designed to point to your subject right that's that's what your mask are designed for so I would even say lean

31:13

into Auto masking I mean Lightroom now specifically their Auto masks are incredible they are one click and most

31:20

of the time it's going to nail it they've got of it's really good with select the subject select people uh

31:27

select Sky yep those are all really really powerful and they're really good at it they're one click and they're one

31:33

click so yeah don't don't don't neglect the the automatic tools that are there

31:39

one of my favorite features from the people version is you can it it'll break

31:44

each person down it's like oh you want to change their you want to whiten their teeth which is something that most

31:49

people have to do anyways um but instead of shout out coffee drinkers I used to have to brush that in yeah manually

31:56

every single time and now that that exists it's like no person two Chang the and and breaks it down vers via the body

32:03

part so it's it's it's very helpful but I say all that to say even even with

32:09

masking less is more yeah like yeah don't don't make great adjustments don't

32:14

make massive adjustments and even if you want to a mask is a great opportunity to

32:20

literally paint yeah if you think of Bob Ross yeah when he starts his painting it's

32:27

normally one color two colors whatever but by the time because he's layered he

32:32

has layered Happy Trees he has layered this Brook running through the the whatever but it it's it's because he

32:38

does a lot of small things that makes this beautiful image he used a little bit of sandstone beige as his Sandy base

32:46

yeah with his big brush cleans the brush with the wide brush a little bit clean

32:51

it it's it's no different with with photo editing do lots of small small

32:59

local adjustments don't cook them don't cook them you'll see a greater impact

33:04

with eight masks yeah versus one giant mask that you've cooked yeah so th that

33:10

that would be that would be my my biggest tips with post production yeah uh in addition to just good catalog

33:17

management yeah um which again you've got a YouTube video for hey Folks by the way let's get jar to a th000 subscribers

33:22

on YouTube he's well on his way yeah well you know if you're out there watching it is more than zero need some

33:28

good tips and tricks he's got a very good channel for that um yeah uh Jared I'm I'm trying to think of

33:35

anything that we can add even to the post- production phase and I think we've nailed it well in regards to speed as

33:42

far yeah I mean as far as saving time obviously there's a lot more granular things when it comes to editing but oh

33:47

you could do a whole episode on editing tips right but today we're just trying to save time editing so I think that right there the biggest is copy and

33:53

pasting yeah and I see so many I see so many images from from beginners and sets

33:59

it's like I don't know if they're just editing each individual image in Photoshop right in which case you don't

34:05

have the reference of the first image and so like or if they just didn't realize that you could copy and paste

34:10

the settings um but yeah that saves a lot of time but be it already already

34:16

helps you a lot in uh having a more cohesive set yeah speaking of Saving Time o speaking of saving time if there

34:24

is anybody that you know and you're listening to this episode that you think this would resonate with them and save

34:29

them some time right with their Creative Photography process shoot them this episode yeah I think uh again we're

34:36

trying to help as many people as we possibly can right um and in return we ask for a couple of things Jerry what

34:41

would those be uh reviews you know review uh leave us a rating yeah stars

34:47

and bars Stars bars uh leave us a comment um specifically I would love to

34:52

hear if you have any editing speed tips yeah put those in the comments down below we read them all good bad or if

34:58

you found a really helpful uh pre-production or location scouting tool that we didn't mention yeah um put it

35:04

all down there again always looking to be better put it all down there also uh again if you would like to try the magic

35:11

M mental performance shot uh we'll put that down the description below as well motion 20 yep is your discount code that

35:17

code and on that note Jared here's the hard part we will see you guys in the next one hey didn't make that very hard

35:23

see ya
