on today's episode of faith and Frames

0:01

we're going to talk about some things

0:02

that we've learned with starting our

0:04

podcast over the last 30ish episodes and

0:07

some tips on helping you get yours

0:10

started yeah so let's let's pivot into

0:12

the tips right so

0:15

so things we've

0:17

learned gosh H well I guess the biggest

0:21

one would

0:22

be uh we talked about it we wanted to do

0:26

one for a long time for various reasons

0:29

we stopped St actually we didn't stop

0:32

that implies that we started we just

0:34

didn't start so it kept us from starting

0:36

right it kept us from from hitting

0:38

record uploading the first episode all

0:40

these

0:42

things I think a lot of people have this

0:46

fear that either a people aren't going

0:49

to want to listen to him which is

0:51

possible yeah certainly possible um

0:53

actually very probable B they're like ah

0:57

I need all this gear to get this one

1:00

once I get all this gear and a little

1:02

bit of skills then I can start my

1:04

podcast well no just don't over

1:06

complicate it yeah

1:08

again what you need to start a podcast

1:11

is a way to record your voice yes that's

1:14

it you've got a you have a voice

1:16

recording uh apparatus in your pocket

1:21

all the time yeah I and listen if you

1:24

don't have a cell phone for whatever

1:25

reason in 2024 get yourself a dadburn

1:29

handheld recorder whatever it is just

1:31

record that voice somehow yeah so yeah

1:34

you don't have to inundate yourself with

1:36

gear I know it's easy for us to sit here

1:39

and say this because we're in the

1:40

industry obviously we work with gear

1:42

every day but at at the basis if all of

1:45

this were to burn up in some way shape

1:47

or fashion and all I had was my phone

1:49

yeah I could still get my podcast

1:51

rolling or I could still continue my

1:54

podcast and so can you if if you're

1:56

starting for the first time so don't

1:57

inate don't inate yourself with gear

2:00

and I guess the other tip that I would

2:02

say is you know obviously I mentioned

2:05

that I think a lot of

2:07

people have Failure to Launch for fear

2:10

of well I don't have anything

2:12

interesting to say uh nobody's going to

2:16

listen first off don't underestimate the

2:19

power yeah of social media right I know

2:22

the

2:23

algorithms can get a bad rap and in some

2:25

cases can be extremely frustrating for

2:28

various reasons but

2:30

they're also pretty good specifically

2:34

YouTube at finding the people who are

2:35

interested you may have a desire to

2:37

start a podcast specifically talking

2:40

about I don't know potatoes and best

2:44

best potato practices and all starch

2:47

related content all starch related

2:49

content guess what people truly as as

2:52

wild and and mundane as that seems you

2:54

got some tater lovers I love ters I love

2:57

ters but you've got some there there's

3:00

an audience for that well I I'll give

3:02

you one close to home uh you know one of

3:04

our good friends Melissa henkins who's

3:05

also been a guest on this podcast hint

3:07

going back to network y uh one of her

3:09

sisters one of her 47 sisters um

3:13

actually has a has a Tik Tok page Ah

3:16

that's dedicated to like Lord of the

3:18

Lings lord of the Lings Lord of the

3:20

Rings lore okay and and I mean that's

3:24

that's it I guess well that's very Niche

3:26

specific very Niche but she has a

3:28

massive massive following now obviously

3:30

that's not a podcast but that just goes

3:32

back to algorith she can make it one but

3:35

the algorithms found her people I want

3:38

to say her her Tik Tok page Melissa you

3:41

can correct me if I'm wrong if you're

3:42

listening I think it's like 70k plus

3:46

followers dang for Lord of the Rings

3:49

lore now that's not something that I'm

3:50

into specifically but there's 70,000

3:53

other people out there that are Cy there

3:54

are others that are R there are others

3:56

that are r that are R and that are also

4:00

um so yeah don't don't underestimate the

4:02

power of social media and again it

4:04

having a global reach beyond your four

4:07

walls yeah so another tip I would give

4:09

you is literally just tailing off of of

4:12

uh that blunder uh let it be you know

4:17

like Let It Be conversational Let It Be

4:19

raw this is the the the best thing for

4:22

me with a podcast is there is such a low

4:26

pressure to it yeah to to be polished

4:30

now I'm not going to sit here and say I

4:31

don't think I really don't think you

4:33

could fill the air with 40 minutes of

4:35

just gabs no that's probably not going

4:38

to be good for many people but like but

4:39

I'm going to leave some blunders oh well

4:41

I mean I you guys just heard of blunder

4:43

I ain't cutting it out I don't care I

4:44

think people really enjoy uh seeing

4:47

those bits you know heck they understand

4:50

that that's a human um and you know what

4:54

we don't always speak with 100% accuracy

4:57

especially in the South especially we're

5:00

doing good to even get the English that

5:02

we get out and to reiterate I don't even

5:04

give a heck well I don't even know where

5:06

that come

5:07

from but so so so yeah let it be

5:10

conversational and and so if you want to

5:13

start a podcast which I know a lot of

5:15

people do MH um I think a lot of people

5:18

have Failure to Launch paralysis by

5:19

analysis all these things but here is a

5:22

great way to kind of uh weade into the

5:27

water tip your toes try it out this

5:29

might be the gu tip go be a guest boom

5:32

more than once boom go be a guest on a

5:35

podcast like 20 times like 20 times I

5:37

mean if you if you have a desire to

5:39

start a podcast you're like I just don't

5:42

know if I think I can do it uh maybe my

5:45

story is not that good maybe I don't

5:46

have enough value to offer first off you

5:48

probably do you do second off a great

5:50

way to start honing that in and to start

5:52

really just kind of getting that

5:53

practice and those reps in tell that

5:55

story go be a guest on podcast many

5:57

times yes I read a I read a thread on

5:59

threads interesting uh from a guy who

6:02

was speaking to that very point he said

6:04

go be a guest on a podcast before you

6:06

even start your own which is yeah

6:07

probably ADV viice we probably should

6:09

have taken but anyways you showed me

6:10

that he said 10 yeah he said go be a

6:12

guess on 10 podcast to it and there

6:14

there's a couple different reasons for

6:15

that we were mentioning this uh in a I'm

6:17

going to call it a mastermind group yep

6:18

that we're we're definitely not the

6:20

masters of the minds but we're just mind

6:22

present we're in a group with a lot of

6:23

smart people and um there was a guy in

6:25

her group saying you know what are some

6:27

ways that I can get into this new Niche

6:29

you know he's wanting to get into like

6:30

Etsy and things like that with what he

6:32

does um specifically podcasting and and

6:35

we literally recommend going and being a

6:37

guest because when you're a guest on a

6:39

podcast you're not having to think of

6:41

new subject matter all the time the only

6:43

piece of subject matter that you truly

6:45

have to hone is that one story of yours

6:48

yep and you're able to reach out to

6:50

other podcasts saying hey here's my

6:53

story here's what I would like to tell

6:54

your audience if this is something that

6:56

you jive with you Vibe with you ride

6:59

with whatever want Call It Whatever

7:00

whatever you can do that and that's the

7:02

only thing that you have to tell at that

7:05

point in time yeah until your comfort

7:07

level gets up right but also too going

7:10

back to the very beginning of this

7:11

episode you are telling that story to

7:14

networks that you on any other occasion

7:16

would probably not have the ability to

7:18

get in front of yeah and so here's how

7:20

it's worked every every every single

7:23

time that we've ever been a guest we do

7:24

this with our guests guess what gets

7:27

attached in the show notes social media

7:30

accounts right you right ways that

7:32

people can further follow you if they

7:35

desire to right so here's the cool thing

7:37

like say you did in fact uh be become a

7:41

guest on 10 podcasts that's 10 people

7:44

who maybe there's some overlapping

7:46

audience maybe there's not but let's

7:47

just say that there's

7:49

not there's 10 groups of audiences that

7:53

are now privy to who you are they've

7:56

heard your story you know what maybe

7:58

they were compelled and now maybe

8:00

they're a follower on some sort of

8:02

social media so here's the benefit to

8:03

that if you do desire to start your

8:07

podcast after becoming a guest you

8:09

already have a pretty good little

8:10

nucleus of people who are a already

8:13

consuming podcasts B like you and yeah

8:16

enjoyed hearing you on a podcast so it's

8:19

an audience that's willing to migrate

8:20

yeah that's uh that's that's already a

8:23

very

8:24

warm most likely podcast listener right

8:27

there when you start your show yeah

8:29

let's just average it out let's say on

8:31

average you know those 10 podcasts that

8:33

you're on have 5,000 listeners that's

8:36

50,000

8:37

listeners just on the podcasting

8:39

platforms that doesn't count social

8:41

medias or anything like like that but

8:43

just 5,000 listeners yeah that is 50,000

8:47

new people 100,000 ears yeah that you

8:51

just gained access toless they're what

8:53

Vincent vano yeah unless they've had one

8:55

chopped off Peter chopped one off yeah

8:58

God put it back on though

9:00

Jesus CED her back on yeah so you're

9:02

you're accessing those networks going

9:04

all the way back to the very beginning

9:06

um be a guest be a guest and I do I

9:08

think that helps people with with

9:09

Comfort levels because here's the thing

9:11

it's kind of hard I mean I know me and

9:13

you do it and we've been doing it for a

9:15

while now but like it's kind of hard to

9:16

hold a well but yeah it is yeah it's

9:19

it's hard to hold a conversation we

9:21

struggle on this podcast at times to

9:23

hold conversation yeah um so being a

9:25

guest on one I believe certainly helps

9:28

with the Comfort levels there and just

9:29

helps with the experience level getting

9:30

your repetitions in yeah I mean if I go

9:33

back take the visual elements completely

9:37

out I know we've changed lighting all

9:38

these things camera angles take all that

9:41

out if we just look

9:43

at dialogue conversation just quality of

9:48

conversation back to our first few

9:50

episodes yeah it's laughable it's

9:52

laughable now we're still learning yeah

9:55

some of some of our recent episodes are

9:57

still laughable but like it's so it's so

10:00

much more easy now that we've

10:04

got

10:06

30ish now that we've got 30ish

10:10

episodes well that's 30ish practices

10:13

yeah it's repetitions so things are

10:15

going to become a little easier because

10:17

yeah I mean it can still be intimidating

10:19

hit and record talking

10:22

to I don't know who knows how many

10:24

people or maybe nobody's listening um

10:28

but like it's it's not not natural you

10:30

know yeah but if you keep it

10:33

conversational and you you just

10:37

naturally let things flow that's going

10:39

to help a lot too yeah I I'll I'll throw

10:42

a I'm going to give you a a BB here uh

10:45

oh well this is be a BT a bonus tip

10:48

because we've already done bonus

10:49

benefits bonus tip is I'm just going to

10:51

say also watch watch different podcasts

10:54

yeah that's true now don't watch so many

10:56

to where you're inundated with you know

10:58

information and inated with being a

11:01

consumer that's certainly a trap that

11:03

can be fallen into um nobody gained a

11:06

massive chest or biceps by doing nothing

11:08

but watching mik o Hearn and Arnold

11:10

Schwarzenegger videos true you

11:11

eventually have to hit the gym um same

11:13

thing with podcast I think it's great to

11:15

do some research maybe on whatever Niche

11:17

you're trying to podcast within but also

11:20

you got to start creating at some point

11:21

in time yeah but it's good to have

11:23

examples of things that are working that

11:25

you can then give your voice on yeah

11:28

start just I mean literally just start

11:31

because you know the uh the old saying

11:34

of the best time

11:35

to start a YouTube channel was

11:38

yesterday well you can't go back and do

11:40

yesterday so the next best time is today

11:45

um and here's the thing I always like to

11:47

use the uh the reference of uh Michael

11:49

Jordan who most people uh would say is

11:51

the goat the greatest of all time at

11:54

some point that boy had never even

11:57

dribbled a basketball very true actually

12:00

up until like high school at some point

12:02

yeah or middle school yeah at some point

12:03

he had never picked up a

12:05

basketball he thenest tons of practice

12:09

rep the greatest became the greatest of

12:10

all time so you don't become the

12:12

greatest if you never actually pick up

12:13

the basketball and I think actually

12:15

recently statistic that I've seen

12:18

amongst his peers and amongst players in

12:20

the league I

12:21

believe

12:25

54% of NBA players say that he's the

12:28

ghost

12:30

wow yeah 54 54% compared to 46% for Mr

12:35

LeBron well I mean the point is is like

12:38

even if you think LeBron's the best

12:39

that's fine that's your opinion I'm not

12:41

going to sit here and argue that's not

12:42

what this podcast if you want to start a

12:44

podcast for that that's great there's

12:45

people that'll listen yeah there is even

12:47

though they're wrong they'll no I'm just

12:49

kidding at some point LeBron or MJ had

12:52

ever Pi up a basketball that's my point

12:55

yeah you can't become their level of

12:58

greatness if you never start very true

13:01

so start uh also I will caution this

13:04

growth is uh growth and success as we

13:06

mentioned earlier is relative yeah

13:08

subjective y very subjective and so I

13:11

will say this unless you already have a

13:13

big following on other

13:16

platforms growth may be slow yeah growth

13:19

may be slow and so just

13:21

remember that these pieces are evergreen

13:25

they are discoverable the work that

13:27

you're doing today can reward you next

13:29

year for the next 5 years all these

13:31

things just be under be of the mindset

13:34

that it may be a slow grow yeah

13:36

understand that you're not Travis and

13:37

Jason Kelce that's a great example right

13:39

new heights I don't know how many

13:41

monthly listeners they have a Brazilian

13:43

they have a lot but if they weren't the

13:46

figures that they were already two

13:48

professional NFL players with great

13:51

success their growth on their podcast

13:53

probably would not have been yeah I mean

13:56

I'm sure they would eventually grown

13:57

because they're entertaining folk MH but

13:59

it wouldn't have started at that level

14:01

and and and accelerated at that well and

14:03

you mentioned off camera even like Doug

14:04

Dynasty yeah unashamed it's one of my

14:06

favorite podcast right like I think Phil

14:08

Jason and Al would have had a tougher

14:10

time with reaching the level of growth

14:13

that they currently have had they not

14:14

had the the fan base and and the

14:17

following that they already had they

14:18

would have they would eventually grown

14:19

the following because that's just what

14:20

happens through the law of averages but

14:23

right yeah slower growth for sure CU

14:24

they're at the end of the day they are

14:25

entertaining dudes they're hilarious

14:27

abut very knowledgeable on the Bible

14:29

especially so they definitely definitely

14:30

cater to to anyone wanting to know good

14:32

theology but yeah like had they not had

14:36

their their platform already yeah from

14:38

Doug dnasty probably would have been a

14:40

slower grow even for them so I will just

14:43

try to encourage you that when you do

14:44

start yeah I think a lot of people

14:47

actually I heard a statistic um I forget

14:49

the number but 10 episodes yeah don't

14:51

make it past 10 episodes right and I can

14:54

understand why because yeah growth has

14:55

been slow and in some cases I even knew

14:57

growth would be slow but it's been slow

14:59

than what I would have thought right but

15:01

you've got to understand the long game

15:04

that is what a podcast is now another

15:07

tip that I would give you on that

15:09

specific note be as efficient as you

15:12

possibly can yes because it can be it

15:16

can be a lot of work oh yeah it can take

15:18

a lot of time it really can so be as

15:21

efficient as you can we've talked about

15:22

it before bat shoot right shoot a couple

15:25

two three episodes whatever your cusp of

15:27

of uh before you start to dip uh in

15:30

quality U maybe you never start with

15:32

quality and literally do it on your

15:33

phone yeah do it on your phone yeah just

15:37

don't don't let that slow growth that's

15:41

pretty likely to occur now you may you

15:44

you may be what what's her name Bobby

15:46

Bobby Bobby ala um whatever oh yeah yeah

15:50

the well she was in over podcast success

15:53

but but that's because she interviewed

15:54

Drake so you know unless you're going to

15:57

interview Drake uh similar figure

16:00

probably going to have a slow growth

16:01

just be aware of that be aware of that

16:03

be okay with that understand that the

16:04

long game is worth it don't let that

16:06

stop you don't let equipment stop you oh

16:08

yeah the equipment that's a good one

16:10

that's a really good one so obviously if

16:12

you've been a guest on our podcast I

16:14

think we've shown a little bit of BTS

16:16

yeah uh we have quite a large setup

16:18

video right you know we bring C stands

16:20

in we bring mic stands in lights but

16:23

that's cuz we want to like we don't have

16:25

to no we do not have to and and you

16:28

don't have to we could simplify this a

16:31

lot we've seen far simpler setups right

16:34

uh even in person we've seen simpler

16:36

setups um some of them look very

16:38

attractive because it's less work to set

16:40

up well I'll tell you this too another

16:42

great another great option that I think

16:46

a lot of people may be aware of maybe

16:48

they're not is is software like

16:51

Riverside yeah yeah yeah yeah so so

16:54

that's a great especially if you're

16:54

having guest oh that's a great guest

16:56

platform because here's the thing we

16:59

love set well we really enjoy setting

17:02

these things up bringing a guest in

17:05

miking them up getting them a camera

17:07

angle because it's what we do well and

17:09

it's fun for us it's kind of like big

17:10

Legos but that requires a lot of work

17:13

lot of coordination scheduling of lot of

17:17

right they've also got to be here in

17:18

person all these things whereas like a

17:20

Riverside it literally feels like a zoom

17:22

call yeah and you can

17:25

be interviewing a podcast guest and

17:28

Portland Oregon yeah so you talk about

17:31

efficiency oh my gosh you talk about

17:33

efficiency my goodness not only

17:35

efficiency but think about that you're

17:37

now tapping into

17:40

somebody's following that probably is

17:42

heavily based in Portland Oregon if you

17:44

desire to be in Portland Oregan yes well

17:45

my point is is like wherever right like

17:48

so so that is a that is another great

17:50

tip

17:51

is uh don't let gear be a caveat if you

17:55

desire to have a video podcast start

17:57

with your uh your laptop yeah right

17:59

laptops have a webcam we're so

18:01

conditioned seeing Zoom calls and stuff

18:02

as a result of Co like it's it's totally

18:05

sufficient well again gear don't doesn't

18:06

have to be a caveat it can actually be a

18:08

catalyst you just mentioned Riverside

18:10

absolutely that's technology that's

18:11

available to you and I as consumers that

18:14

you can literally interview somebody

18:15

anywhere in the whole entire world yes

18:18

we've been a guest on Riverside and

18:19

actually that was a pretty again talking

18:22

about Simplicity I wrapped up with that

18:24

after we we hit cut and or called cut

18:26

and I was like damn

18:29

I didn't even have pants on for That

18:30

interview I'm just kidding I did I had

18:33

pants on but nobody didn't have to have

18:35

pants on did uh kind of subconscious

18:38

like you probably need pants dude didn't

18:40

have to set up lights any of those

18:41

things so like yeah just just don't let

18:44

gear or a lack thereof over complicate

18:47

it and become a barrier

18:49

because starting a podcast is doesn't

18:52

have to be that way no it's actually

18:53

pretty easy yeah pretty easy to start

18:55

one when you start it guess what there

18:57

are paid platforms that you can host it

18:58

with but they're also free platforms you

19:00

can use places like Spotify uh it's

19:03

still free to upload to Youtube I was

19:04

going to say YouTube still my favorite

19:06

yeah even for even for even for podcast

19:10

absolutely so just don't over complicate

19:13

it

19:14

don't be

19:16

paralyzed by your lack of

19:19

gear I like that I've heard several

19:21

people tell me hey you know what i' I've

19:23

wanted to start a podcast I don't have a

19:25

camera I just don't have a good way of

19:27

doing it and uh you know I just I just I

19:31

don't know several people have even told

19:32

me that they listen to a podcast I'm

19:34

like well good gosh you've already got a

19:35

pot of listeners right there yeah

19:37

they're asking you to start a podcast oh

19:39

and you just bought the new iPhone 15

19:41

Pro so there you go I think you're good

19:43

to go wise get that thing started fire

19:46

that bad boy up what you're going to

19:48

learn and this is probably my final tip

19:50

right it's like when you do have

19:52

guests it's great to have bullet points

19:55

yeah and Topics in mind like hey on this

19:58

so we're going to talk about these three

20:00

things have a loose structure have a

20:01

loose structure but like your initial

20:05

podcast topic idea I think it's great to

20:07

have a plan but you need to be willing

20:10

to Pivot yeah and be okay with change

20:12

because the what you envisioned yeah may

20:16

not be the best way for it to actually

20:18

take place and so we've had that happen

20:19

a lot of times we've had guests on we've

20:21

told them like Hey we're going to cover

20:22

these three topics the conversation

20:24

takes a turn naturally I was going to

20:26

say just like any natural conversation

20:28

in the real world and we didn't find a

20:30

good way to get to that third bullet

20:31

point and it just wouldn't have fit and

20:32

it worked out great so just be willing

20:35

and be okay with you know maybe going

20:38

off script guess what secret information

20:41

here I'm going to declassify some

20:42

information oh people don't know what

20:44

your bullet points are because they

20:46

don't hear them oh it's a good point so

20:48

it doesn't matter it's good point it

20:49

doesn't matter great Point great point

20:51

so yeah not only in your episodes with

20:54

your guests be willing to Pivot but even

20:56

even as a broader topic of like I want

20:59

to start a channel on

21:01

sourdough we've been hitting sourdough a

21:03

lot lately it's popular and I love

21:05

sourdough I do love sour uh well for

21:07

this for this episode specifically we

21:09

had 1 two 3 four five six seven eight

21:11

nine 10 bullet points and I've only

21:13

checked off a few of them which I've

21:14

also forgotten to check off some as we

21:16

go but we've not got to them all and

21:18

that's okay yeah you guys didn't know

21:19

that until just now when I told on us

21:21

yeah understand that

21:24

uh they don't

21:26

know what you didn't talk about but

21:29

they're thankful for what you did talk

21:30

about in most cases yeah yeah we think

21:32

so on that note Jared speaking of things

21:34

to talk about uh there are some things

21:37

that our audience can talk about with us

21:39

that we would greatly appreciate what

21:41

are those feedback oh that was my other

21:44

tip dang it oh okay that's okay we we

21:47

can roll that back dang it now we'll

21:49

just keep it going so the last tip mhm I

21:53

don't know how many times I've said that

21:54

now a lot of tips the last tip counter

21:57

yeah lot of tips there T the final

22:01

tip accept

22:03

feedback ask for feedback accept

22:05

feedback in all forms as we've just done

22:08

yeah just understand that every piece of

22:10

feedback whether you agree with it or

22:12

not is is someone giving you their

22:15

opinion it's useful information it's

22:16

useful information now whether that

22:17

comes through the YouTube comment

22:19

section uh a review a rating on on a on

22:22

another platform or maybe it comes in

22:25

person through a friend who's a

22:27

listener feedback is good yeah you need

22:30

that you need to hone in your message

22:32

all feedback is good now even if you

22:33

don't think it's a good piece of

22:34

feedback maybe they were ugly about it

22:36

or whatever there's some turds out there

22:38

still uh but turds do provide feedback

22:40

yeah you know what maybe they had a

22:42

little bit of Merit maybe they could

22:43

have delivered it a little more politely

22:45

to you but hey there's big turds and

22:47

there's little turds there well there

22:49

you go in more than one way on that note

22:51

we're gonna get out of here uh but not

22:54

before we ask you guys to leave us a

22:55

review yeah uh give us a a comment let

22:58

us know what you think um if here's a

23:02

here's a big one if you want start a

23:03

podcast we'd love to help you love to

23:05

help you we actually have a free guide

23:07

down in the show notes on description

23:10

below give it a download uh let us know

23:14

if you have any questions truly podcast

23:16

is fun podcasts are fun and uh we'd love

23:19

to help you get yours off the ground

23:22

here's the hard part Jared we will see

23:24

you guys in the next one he didn't make

23:26

that very hard y'all have a good one
