If I build it, they will come, right? Wrong.

One of the most commonly repeated lines from any movie is “If you build it, they will come”, right? We’ve all heard it and you’ll likely hear it again.

We should be able to apply that to business, right? If I’m starting a business, once I get it up, customers (they), will come. That’s logical, but unfortunately that simply isn’t the case.

That’s what one of our clients thought

Our client, the owner of @starfitness told us, in a recent podcast, “I can’t believe I’ve put all of this time and energy into all of this brand new gym equipment and nobody knows it’s here”.

You see, Preston had just did a COMPLETE overhaul of all of the equipment in his gym. He had fresh coats of paints on all of the walls. He had brand new flooring. He had re-did the locker rooms. He had put in time, effort, and money into this. He had BUILT IT. Surely, they’d come, right?

What he realized was that even though he had spent all of this time and invested into improvements within his gym facility, people couldn’t come to something that they didn’t know about. Think about it, if you don’t know something exists, how could you possibly utilize it?

This was a little over 2 years ago now. @starfitnesstn Instagram had about 1500 followers and if memory serves, there were about 800 active members. Preston came to us and we came up with a plan to utilize consistent social media to get his message out. Through consistently putting his message out, he’s been able to grow his memberships as well as increase his social media followers. Now, more people know, so more people come.

Star Fitness is a large facility and it helps spread members out during busy times of the day.

Final Thoughts

You may be similar to our client in this story. Full transparency, we at Motion Creative are just like our client. Greeneville, TN is not a very large town. It’s a town where everybody knows what you do, what you did, and what your’e gonna do. Yet, Garrett and I still, to this day, run into people who don’t know that we run a media company. I literally think “how can you not know? We’ve built a business, here”. Then I think, well, we’ve not really done the best job of getting the message out. I can’t expect people to know something that I’ve not told them.

We helped Preston get his message out through consistent social media content. For this problem, that was the solution. If you find yourself in a similar boat, we’d love to help get your message out so that they, will in fact, come.
